Artifacts found at
Great American Clean Up
While volunteers were searching
for trash and litter Saturday April 14, 2012 around the grounds
of the bike path adjacent to the Wilbur Kelly House in Lincoln,
RI, they found a pile of broken pieces of pottery from the early
1800's. Vicki Carter, the DEM Park Ranger at the Wilbur Kelly
House identified them and will put them in a display at the
house. "It seems we were cleaning up litter from the mill
workers who worked here 200 years ago." commented Vicki as she
enthusiastically looked over the find. The volunteers were from
the Sierra Club, a Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Proft, helping out the
"Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful" organization with the clean
up. When they brought their bag of trash back, Vicki noticed the
items at the top of their bag. They were able to show the
location of the pottery find to Vicky who intends to search the
area further.
At the clean up, over 20
volunteers collected 20 bags of litter plus an old rusted
muffler and a strange pink plastic thing. "I can't believe
people would throw their dog poop bags into the woods" commented
a volunteer. Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful is a program of
the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council and an affiliate of Keep
America Beautiful. More clean ups are planned for this week and
especially on Earth Day weekend. People interested in
volunteering can check out the website:
keepblackstonevalleybeautiful.com. A special thanks goes to
Joyce Benson who initiated the idea of a cleanup, Al Klyberg, a
volunteer with DEM on that day, and Walter Szeliga, a National
Park Service Volunteer and all the volunteers who took time out
of their beautiful Saturday morning to clean up a small part of
America.
